The closed and proprietary nature of all mainstream cellular basebands is extremely offensive to those of us who are devoted freedom lovers, and when I learned that it is possible to produce a truly free (as in freedom) GSM cellular baseband by making use of some firmware source code, detailed documentation and physical chips that have been disowned and discarded in the trash by a certain company that once made baseband chipsets but no longer does, I eagerly jumped on this opportunity.
In this presentation I shall retrace the journey that brought our FreeCalypso project to where it is now, and demonstrate the Open Source Hardware GSM mobile station development board we have built, running our open source (or rather liberated source) FreeCalypso firmware to provide the full functionality of a commercial quality GSM+GPRS modem.
