The Making of the Kosher Phone
A Kosher phone would be an adapted feature phone to the “special” needs of a certain community of the Ultra Orthodox Jews. The community in target asked for a phone that is dumber than the dumb phone, a phone that suffers from complete retardation. The general idea is that they don’t want to be open to the outside world in any way, but they still want a means to communicate between themselves without breaking the strict boundaries they made. For the task a Nokia feature phone was chosen for its’ cost-effective reasons. But to introduce firmware modifications there was a need to overcome many of the Nokia secret protections and integrity checks.
I will provide a demonstration of the full process of adopting one DCT4+ module, and all of the phases of research I went through during the work. Also, I will cover the work in progress of researching the firmware protection of the newest modules made by Nokia.
The same techniques that I used for this work can be used to research the baseband binary and serve as a good base in patching it. It can also help in creating Spy-phones or understanding how a feature phone might be compromised.
A paper covering some of the content of the talk will be published soon in Travis Goodspeed’s POC||GTFO.
